Ajrakh

Ajrakh is a block printing technique that originated from Sindh and post partition is most commonly made in Kutch. The process of ajrakh is around 12 - 14 steps including making the blocks, preparing the fabric, preparing the dyes, imprinting the design and drying. What sets ajrakh apart from other forms of block printing is that it incorporates resist dying. This means that materials like wax, clay paste, starch paste, and/or chemicals are used to protects areas or designs as the fabric gets dyed. Traditional ajrak incorporates 4 colors, red yellow indigo and black using natural dyes.
